The critically endangered spotted handfish lives only in the Derwent estuary, with significant populations found in the area between Battery Point and Sandy Bay.

The problem

Installation and maintenance of moorings during handfish breeding season can disturb these fish and destroy their egg masses.

How you can help

Where possible, in the area between CSIRO and Blinking Billy Point, schedule mooring installation and maintenance activities outside of the period from 15 August to 15 December, when spotted handfish are breeding and guarding their eggs.

For further information about this amazing fish please visit our spotted handfish web page. For more details about moorings and their maintenance visit Marine and Safety Tasmania.
