A very exciting stage in the Windermere Bay Saltmarsh Restoration Project was reached on 26 June 2025 with the planting of 370 native plants by a dedicated community of volunteers – including many friendly faces from the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania, as well as Conservation Volunteers Australia – Hobart and Glenorchy City Council. And on 28 June 2025 the Claremont Coastcare group added an additional 350 plants to transform this grassy area into a beautiful native woodland.
The planting of a range of riparian and woodland natives will act as a natural buffer upland of the saltmarsh and increase habitat for terrestrial native species in the bay, making this a wildlife haven.
Why not celebrate National Tree Day on Sunday 27 July 2025 by heading on down to Windermere Bay to enjoy a nice walk along the new boardwalk and a look at the new plantings! By revisiting this site over the years to come you will see the recovery of this saltmarsh, and growth of the native buffer vegetation.
This project is funded through the Australian Government’s Urban Rivers and Catchments Program.
