Recreational fishing

In Tasmania, licenses are required for certain types of recreational fishing and some restrictions apply.

The collection and consumption of shellfish from the estuary is not recommended due to high levels of heavy metals. A recent study of mercury levels in Derwent caught bream and sea run trout found they are above recommended food safety standards and health advice recommends that consumption of these fish be avoided.

Derwent caught flathead fish meet recommended national mercury guidelines, however pregnant and breastfeeding women, women planning to become pregnant and children should limit their consumption of to no more than one meal per week.
